Website Maintenance 101
Website Maintenance is one of those necessary evils for every website owner out there. The websites I produce for my clients are very near and dear to me and therefore would like to offer my guidance on keeping your website maintained if you wish to do so yourself. This list is not an end-all, do-all, but rather a basic “To Do” list to keep your site up to date and hopefully free of becoming hacked.
On a monthly basis, perform these tasks after logging into the backend of your site:
- Perform any theme and/or WordPress core updates
- Perform all plugin updates, including premium plugins
- Check that all newly added images have alt-text filled in and are an acceptable size, no larger than 40-50k
- Check the ‘Forms’ entries to be sure you’ve received all your Contact Us messages
- Check the ‘Comments’ section for any you may have missed, clean up and delete unnecessary ones
- Backup Buddy – Check that these backups are running regularly and are being stored properly in case they are needed. (Complete and Database)
- Check that your site is still being Cached, important for website page load speed
